This course explores today's major health issues and behaviors in the various dimensions of health. The importance of individual responsibility for personal health and the promotion of informed, positive health behaviors is emphasized. Topics that will be discussed include the dimensions of health, vital statistics, infectious diseases, chronic diseases, nutrition, weight management, exercise, reproductive health, aging, mental health and stress, substance use and abuse, healthcare, and environmental health.

Women's Health Issues

This course explores women’s health issues within the context of the dimensions of health. Topics include gender differences in health and mortality, reproductive health issues, sexuality, mental health, stress management, positive body image and self-esteem, nutrition, weight management, chronic and infectious diseases, and substance use and abuse. The importance of individual responsibility for personal health and the promotion of informed, positive health behaviors will be discussed.

Men's Health Issues

This course is designed to explore contemporary health issues and how they affect men. A variety of topics will be addressed, including; cardiovascular disease, relationships and sexuality, alcohol and substance abuse, stress, and psychological health. These topics will be examined with a focus on how they influence the wellness of men.

U.S. Health Care Systems

This course provides students with an understanding of the U.S. health care systems and health insurance options to provide for efficient navigation through the healthcare system. The course will examine healthcare delivery systems and personal health as integrated physiological, social, psychological processes. Topics include the history and types of health insurance in the U.S.; the roles of the U.S. healthcare workforce; contemporary healthcare issues; different types of care; public assistance programs and disability programs; and ethical and bioethical issues.

Introduction to Community Health Worker

This course provides foundational knowledge and skills intended to prepare students as a community health worker (CHW) in health-related fields. A CHW assists individuals and communities in adopting healthy behaviors. Emphasis will be placed on developing the professional community health worker core competencies including health promotion, community outreach, patient relations, and advocacy skills.

Public Health Work Experience
72 hours laboratory
Grading: letter grade.
Students learn and gain on-the-job experience in the Public Health field. Learning objectives are established collaboratively by the student, supervisor, and instructor. A minimum of sixty (60) hours of non-paid work or seventy-five (75) hours of paid work during the semester are required for each unit of credit. Students may earn from 1 to 4 units credit.
